Step-by-Step Guide
If you've ever tried to upload iPhone photos to a website or share them with an Android user, you've likely encountered the HEIC format. Introduced by Apple in 2017 with iOS 11, HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) stores photos at roughly half the file size of JPEG with comparable quality. The problem? Many apps, websites, and non-Apple devices still don't support it. Here's how to convert HEIC to JPG on every platform.
HEIC is based on the HEVC (H.265) video compression standard. It uses advanced encoding techniques to achieve 40–50% smaller file sizes compared to JPEG at equivalent quality. For iPhone users, this means nearly twice as many photos fit on the same storage. The tradeoff is compatibility: while Apple's ecosystem handles HEIC natively, Windows PCs, older Android devices, and many web platforms require JPEG or PNG.
Step 1: Go to Fluxora and navigate to the Image tool.
Step 2: Drag and drop your HEIC files into the upload area. You can batch-select multiple files at once.
Step 3: Select "JPG" as the output format from the format grid.
Step 4: Click "Convert" — your files are processed entirely in your browser, never uploaded to any server.
Step 5: Download your JPG files individually or use "Download All" for batch downloads.
This method is completely free, requires no software installation, and keeps your photos private since nothing leaves your device.
Prevent future HEIC files by switching your camera to JPEG: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. This saves all new photos as JPEG instead of HEIC. Note that existing HEIC photos in your library won't be converted — only new ones.
When sharing photos via AirDrop, iPhone automatically converts HEIC to JPEG if the receiving device doesn't support HEIC. You can also use the Files app: open the HEIC photo, tap the share button, and choose "Save as JPEG" from the available options.
Microsoft offers official HEIC support via the Microsoft Store. Search for "HEIF Image Extensions" and install it (free for Windows 10/11). Once installed, the Photos app can open HEIC files and save them as JPEG: right-click the HEIC file → Open with → Photos → "..." menu → Save as → JPEG.
For batch conversion on Windows, use Fluxora's browser-based tool — it handles hundreds of files at once without installing anything.
Step 1: Open the HEIC file in Preview (double-click).
Step 2: Go to File → Export.
Step 3: Choose "JPEG" from the Format dropdown.
Step 4: Adjust the Quality slider (85–90% recommended for good balance).
Step 5: Click Save.
Open Automator → Create a new "Quick Action" → Add "Change Type of Images" → Set output to JPEG → Save. Now you can right-click any folder of HEIC photos in Finder and run your custom quick action to batch-convert them all.
A common concern when converting HEIC to JPG is quality loss. Since both are lossy formats, converting from HEIC to JPEG involves re-encoding, which technically introduces generation loss. However, at high quality settings (85%+), the difference is imperceptible to the human eye. For archival purposes, consider converting HEIC to PNG (lossless) to preserve maximum quality, at the cost of larger file sizes.
For quick, private HEIC-to-JPG conversion, a browser-based tool like Fluxora is your best bet — no installs, no uploads, instant results. For ongoing compatibility, switch your iPhone camera to "Most Compatible" mode. And for professional workflows, Mac's Automator or a batch desktop tool provides the most control.
